      The said Ranulph de Meschiens married Lucia sister of Hugh Lupus aforesaid (Hugues d'Avranches), by whom he had issue a son and a daughter. The son, Ranulph de Meschiens, so called after his father's name, succeeded to the Cumberland and Westmorland estates (exept what his father had before granted away to his brother William de Meschiens and others); and afterwards, upon the death of Richard brother of the said Hugh Lupus, the said Ranulph the son was, in his mother's right, being next heir in blood, and by the favor of the king, made earl of Chester.
